NEW YORK – Hundreds of costumed dogs have descended on a New York City park for what’s billed as the nation’s largest Halloween dog parade.

Thousands of spectators mingled Saturday with about 300 four-legged contestants near the stage in Manhattan’s Tompkins Square Park. Every imaginable breed was paraded one by one to preen before judges in the hopes of a Best in Show award.

There were doggy dinosaurs, an alligator and a fisherman. There also were characters from “The Wizard of Oz” and “The Flintstones” and a dog dressed as Pope Francis.

Manhattan resident Robert Krzywicki says his dachshund, Daisy Mae, was treated “like a movie star.”

But he says he suspects his dog and many others were freaked out and a little humiliated by their costumes.
